Car report Jetta TDI

On the occasion of the Canadian Grand Prix at Montreal we tested a Volkswagen Jetta TDI.

Technical data:
VW Jetta TDI, 90 horsepower, 1,9 liter, four cylinder, automatic gearchange, ABS, fueling: town 5.7 liters (1.51 gallons) per 100 km (62.14 miles), highway 4.4 liters (1.16 gallons) per 100 km (62.14 miles).

The Volkswagen Jetta TDI is an uncomplicated car for families and city traffic. And while that means it's economical, spacious and usable round tight city streets, it does come at a price. That price is that when you try to accelerate, you might struggle to finds anything approaching sports car power, but keeping in mind North American speed limits, finding mid-range torque to blast you from 50-90 in a nanosecond isn't really a prime concern. The big advantage is the car´s wonderful handling. Patricia from Montreal drives a Jetta herself and is in love the handling and the ease of use of the Jetta: "It´s great, I drive my car, the car doesn´t drive me, but we both get to where we are going at the same time! It is very good to handle, it´s very good steering with the car, to own one is to love one and it is a great joy to drive the car.“

Driving in the city:
City streets and the negotiation of town traffic is the natural habitat of the VW Jetta TDI. Acceleration away from traffic lights is excellent. You'll also find that working your way through narrow side streets and alleys is no problem, and tight parking spaces are what the Jetta was made for. Easy to make it through to the CBD and easy to slot it in to a parking space if you can locate one!

Passengers comfort:
Elegant leather seats are a bit of a bonus from VW and don't come as standard in many territories. There are also plenty of sidepockets and cupholders, which means that if you are undertaking a long drive in the Jetta there's definitely room for that extra big gulp coffee to keep you going. Add to that a sunroof which makes you feel like you are driving a convertable and the Jetta also proves its worth on the open road.

What was the biggest surprise?
The huge profile of Volkswagen in Canada. Everywhere you go you see the big VW-Logo. nearly every Canadian has owned a VW at least once in his or her driving career and most have nothing but fond memories of the experience. You certainly get the impression that Volkswagen is the best known car company - and the best liked! Patricia is a very good example of that: "I like Volkswagen products! Because they are very, very reliable cars. I need to have a reliable and safe car. I went on a major trip last year - drove to the Carolinas with my Jetta - and I can't complain about one thing - it is a really solid car to drive!“
